  19. The problem, which is probably caused by the Rockwell chipset in the PPI
  20. modem?  For workarounds, see

  22. suggest you try:

  24. S27=48   (disable V.42 detect phase)
  25. S54.5=1  (disable the 3429 symbol rate)
  26. S56.7=1  (disable V.FC)
  27. S54.7=1  (disable V.34 by disabling V.8)

  29. One possible catch is that USR changed the S-register settings in later
  30. Sportsters; if you have such a modem, these suggestions won't help.  <sigh>
